Genetics

The genetics research program is focusing on the study of both commercial and non-commercial animals and plants of Malaysia. Researchers in the Department of Biology, UPM use molecular, population, quantitative and cytogenetic approaches to answer many genetic questions. Here, researchers attempt to understand the: (i) gene(s)/allele(s) frequency, expression and mutation, (ii) Mendelian inheritance, (iii) Trait(s) heritability, and (iv) Karyotyping of animals/plants in the selected population(s). The aims of this program are to: (i) Produce students with high proficiency in molecular/population/quantitative/cytogenetic (ii) Publish findings in journals, books and periodic publications, (iii) Present findings in local/international seminars, conferences and workshops, and (iv) Assist in conservation/breeding program which will significantly improving the rural communities’ income, secure the local seed industry, increase the food security, sustain the local genetic diversity, and promote the blue economy.
