The need for catalytic technology as a solution for current environmental and industrial problems will be more prominent in the new millennium. Catalysts are widely used in chemical production, power generation, filtering processes, natural gas conversion, chiral synthesis, agricultural chemistry, pharmaceutical processes, polymer production and biotechnology. The economic effect of catalysts is evident in industrialised countries where heterogeneous catalysts contribute between 20% and 25% of their nations' gross national revenue. Numerous issues are faced by societies in these countries such as the need to create a balance between industrial production and environmental concerns, a more efficient use of fuels, an economical energy production, and a reduction in the emission of CO2 and other green house gases. All these require a solution in which catalysts play an important part.
Apart from that, the development of new catalysts and catalytic processes will provide new opportunities for new chemical processes which would reduce by-products or waste products. Our intention is to understand further the catalytic phenomena at molecular and basic kinetic reactive levels. Current research interests include oxide and mixed oxides catalysis, photo-catalysis, reformative catalysis, bio-catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis and homogeny.
