The chemical elements are the building blocks of all matter, whether it is living or nonliving; earth, water and air around us, animals and plants, food or synthetic materials. This gives chemistry a central place in the basic sciences, as it is linked with other disciplines from biological sciences to physics, medical, earth and environmental sciences, as well as engineering.
