Little Scientist Program Encourages the Spirit of STEM Learning in the Younger Generation

UPM, November 17 - The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at UPM has successfully organized the Little Scientist Program with the aim of enhancing the spirit of learning in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through interactive workshops. This ongoing initiative takes a creative approach to instilling interest in children to understand and apply scientific concepts.

This year's Little Scientist Program has shown a significant change with the introduction of practical workshops consisting of two modules. Designed to make science learning more engaging, these modules are specifically tailored for young people aged 9-15.

The first module, held on November 16, saw the participation of 40 students from the National School (Felda) Air Tawar 4, Kota Tinggi Johor. They had the opportunity to learn water rocket building activities under the guidance of Dr. Nadiah, the program chair for this module. Dr. Nadiah stated that the module not only taught how to build water rockets but also introduced basic scientific principles to the participants.

The second module, conducted on November 17, attracted 27 participants from various backgrounds. This module focused on introducing the wonders of forensic science, including topics such as fingerprint uniqueness and decoding secret messages using scientific theories. In addition, participants were involved in practical chemistry experiments, exploring concepts such as acid-base reactions and oxidation processes. Dr. Sazlinda, the chairperson of module 2, expressed gratitude for the positive feedback from participants and parents.

Dr. Nadiah and Dr. Sazlinda emphasized the Department of Chemistry's full commitment at the Faculty of Science, UPM, to continue supporting and implementing these educational activities in the community. The success of the Little Scientist Program highlights the importance of fostering a love for science from the school level. By combining innovation with an interactive approach, these workshops not only deliver scientific knowledge but also strengthen essential skills that benefit participants in understanding and applying scientific knowledge in their daily lives.
