Exceeding expectation- holistic student development initiatives by PYSA and PYSC

Nurturing future leaders is of critical importance. We must cultivate comprehensive knowledge, strong character, refined interpersonal abilities and entrepreneurial skills in the next generation. This ensures that young people are adequately prepared to address contemporary challenges, make significant societal contributions, and drive economic and social progress. In this perspectives, providing appropriate platforms for young talent is essential for achieving excellence across academic and other key areas. Aligning with the UPM Vice Chancellor's vision of exceeding expectation ("Melangkaui Jangkaan"), the inauguration ceremony for the Putra Young Scientists Care (PYSC) and Putra Young Scientists Apprentice (PYSA) programs, held at Dewan Kuliah Sains (DKS) on 10 January 2025, represents a collaborative achievement involving university staff, students and industry partners. These initiatives, led by Assoc. Prof. ChM Dr. Tan Kar Ban, are founded on two core principles: a student-centric approach ("From Students for Students"), emphasising peer-driven benefits and a commitment to service ("We Love, We Care, We Help"), reflecting the programs' supportive ethos.

Notably, the PYSC and PYSA programs pursue several key objectives: (i) providing financial aid and resources to underprivileged students to ensure their academic and personal success; (ii) cultivating future leaders by fostering leadership skills, positive attributes, entrepreneurship and organisational skills; (iii) promoting camaraderie, racial harmony and a caring university community; (iv) enhancing student marketability and improving their standard of living by integrating academic learning with practical experience and promoting entrepreneurship and (v) establishing community networks through collaboration between UPM and industrial stakeholders, thus creating a supportive ecosystem for student well-being and entrepreneurial ventures.

To meet these goals within the allotted two years, several pragmatic actions have been planned and implemented. PYSC, in collaboration with Ninso Global Sdn Bhd, offers a novel flexible financial aid program, distributed via Ninso Apps Credits, to support underprivileged students. Four hundred qualified students will receive a total of RM 40,000 in aid through the application process promoted via online platforms. This ensures they have access to necessary resources, such as daily necessities, stationery and food. Concurrently, PYSA, in strategic partnership with Everlife-Analisa Resources, aims to bridge academic learning with practical experience to enhance students' financial prospects. Sharing sessions with successful entrepreneurs and distinguished alumni from diverse industries serve to prepare graduates for the dynamic business world, thus offering insights into corporate demands and opportunities for employment, internships and entrepreneurial ventures.

In essence, success hinges on unwavering commitment, diligent effort and effective collaboration among key stakeholders. Hence, the Deputy Vice Chancellor’s Office (Academic and International) and Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia, are highly committed to fostering strategic industry partnerships to advance Environmental, Social and Governance (ESR) initiatives. Ultimately, a strong support system and collaborative network ensure seamless program implementation, thus culminating a well-rounded younger generation that contributes to a thriving and harmonious society.
