SERDANG, 17 April 2026 – The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organised the International Day of Mathematics 2026 (IDM2026) celebration themed Mathematics and Hope from March to April 2026, serving as a platform to promote knowledge, innovation and appreciation of the role of mathematics in everyday life and society.
The IDM2026 Closing Ceremony was officiated by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Associate Professor Dr. Nor Azwady Abd Aziz, on 17 April 2026.
Various activities were organised throughout the celebration to bring mathematics closer to the community while highlighting its importance in education, daily life and national development.
Among the key activities was the Mathematics Games Project at Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih, Kuala Lumpur, led by Dr. Muhammad Aslam Mohd Safari. The project provided students with opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through engaging and interactive game-based activities.
Another major programme under IDM2026 was the International Data Science Challenge 2026 (IDSC2026), led by Dr. Ahmad Hakiim Jamaluddin. The programme focused on the application of mathematics, data science and artificial intelligence in addressing real-world challenges, particularly in the healthcare sector.
Overall, the organisation of IDM2026 demonstrated the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science, UPM’s continued commitment to strengthening academic excellence, research and international networking.
The programme not only encouraged greater interest in mathematics among students and the wider community but also provided opportunities for talent development, innovation and the exploration of science-based solutions that could benefit society and the nation.
