Faculty of Science UPM Excels at I-PICTL2025 x SULAM@UPM Carnival

The Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), proudly celebrates an outstanding achievement as several of its academic staff received prestigious awards at the 7th International Putra InnoCreative Carnival in Teaching and Learning (I-PICTL2025), held in conjunction with the SULAM@UPM Carnival 2025 on 16–17 June 2025. This national-level event brought together educators and researchers from various institutions to showcase innovative and impactful teaching and learning practices, alongside community-based engagement projects under the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative.

Lecturers from the Department of Biology, Physics, and Mathematics represented the faculty with distinction, winning numerous accolades across multiple categories including Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals.

In the Gold Medal category, several projects stood out. The project entitled “Comic Strips as Pedagogical Tools: Fostering Creativity and Comprehension in Biology Education” by Associate Professor Dr. Nur Ain Izzati Mohd Zainudin, together with Dr. Edward Entalai Anak Besi and Dr. Mat Rasid Ishak, received a gold medal. Another gold was awarded to the project “Bridging Biology and Creativity through BioArt: Immersive Learning with Cyanotype for Gen Z Learners” by Associate Professor Dr. Faridah Qamaruz Zaman and Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir. In addition, Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir earned a second gold medal for the project “Animal Inside Out” Physiological Exhibition through Immersive and Experiential Learning for Community Knowledge Transfer”, co-led with Dr. Meenakshii Nallappan. From the Department of Physics, Associate Professor Dr. Nurisya Mohd Shah and Ricardo Andre Gonzalez Gomez were also recognised with a gold medal for their project entitled “Understanding Tensors Through Image Transformation Operations.” Dr. Syafrina Abdul Halim from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics was also awarded a Gold Medal for her project entitled “Modular Mind Map: Empowering MTH3003 Students to Master Hypothesis Testing for Social Science Research”.

In the Silver Medal category, recognition was given to the project “Fostering Adaptive Learning through Community-Based Experiential Assessment in Epidemiology” by Associate Professor Dr. Shamarina Shohaimi, Dr. Meenakshii Nallappan, Dr. Syafinaz Amin Nordin, and Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir. Another silver was awarded to Associate Professor Dr. Suriati Binti Paiman and Dr. Izdihar Kamal of the Department of Physics for their project “Transforming Semiconductor Education Through AI-Driven Problem-Based Learning for Sustainable Development Goals.”

In the Bronze Medal category, Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir once again received recognition for the project “Immersive Learning through Gamification and Student-Designed Biology Modules: A Peeragogical Approach to Active Engagement.” The Faculty also earned a bronze in the SULAM@UPM track through the project “Mathematical Exploration: Creativity in Learning with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dengkil”, led by Dr. Nur Syahirah Wahid, Dr. Nur Ezlin Zamri, and Dr. Farid Zamani Che Rose from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

These achievements reflect the Faculty of Science’s strong commitment to advancing education through innovation, creativity, and community involvement. The faculty continues to champion academic excellence by developing teaching approaches that are not only student-centred but also responsive to the demands of a rapidly changing world. Congratulations are extended to all the award recipients for bringing pride to UPM and serving as an inspiration for higher education institutions across the region.
