Golden Jubilee Carnival of the Faculty of Science Sparks Students' Interest in STEM

Serdang, 20 May 2025 – In conjunction with its 50th anniversary celebration, the Faculty of Science at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised the Golden Jubilee Carnival @Faculty of Science, held at the faculty’s compound today. The event successfully gathered over 300 students from both within and outside the campus in an effort to ignite interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The carnival featured a variety of interactive and innovative exhibitions by all departments under the Faculty of Science. Among the main attractions were exhibitions by the Department of Biology such as Frozen in Time: Zoollery, Animal Inside Out: Animal Physiological DIY Systems, and At the Edge of Sight: Microscopic Worlds. The Department of Physics showcased engaging activities including Junior Crime Scene Investigator, Magic in Physics, and Artificial Intelligence in Life.

Meanwhile, the Department of Chemistry attracted attention with exhibits like Symmetry and Common Solid Structure in Life and a demonstration titled Fascinating Fruits Battery. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics added a creative twist through their Mathematics & Art Fusion exhibition.

The event was further enlivened by the participation of two external agencies, Standard Chartered and Pfizer, which set up booths themed around science awareness in modern life. Additionally, food stalls and health product booths by BMS Organics contributed to the vibrant atmosphere.

More than 200 secondary school students from SMK Putrajaya Presint 9, SMK Sri Indah, SMK Sri Serdang, SMK Dengkil, and MRSM Kuala Kubu Bharu attended the event, along with 100 UPM students.

According to the organisers, the carnival was not only a celebration of the faculty’s golden jubilee but also served as a platform to strengthen awareness and interest in STEM through fun and practical approaches.

Feedback from participants and accompanying teachers was overwhelmingly positive. Many described the carnival as highly beneficial and expressed hope that it would become an annual event.

With the success of this carnival, the Faculty of Science at UPM continues to demonstrate its commitment to promoting science to the public and empowering STEM education at both school and university levels.
