SERDANG, 14 January 2026 – Department of Mathematics and Statistics UPM, Faculty of Science, successfully organized the Public Lecture Series 01/2026 on Wednesday at the department’s Graduate Seminar Room.

The session, held from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, featured Dr. Ahmad Hakiim Jamaluddin as the invited speaker. He delivered a talk titled “Bayesian Mixture Models via Histograms”, focusing on modern statistical approaches for analyzing complex data.

In his lecture, Dr. Ahmad Hakiim explained that Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) are widely used due to their flexibility in modeling complex data distributions. However, he also highlighted challenges in parameter estimation, particularly when dealing with large-scale datasets.

He further elaborated on how Bayesian approaches and methods such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) can be utilized to improve analytical efficiency, especially through the use of data structures like histograms. This approach not only helps reduce computational burden but also preserves essential statistical properties of the data.

The lecture attracted participation from postgraduate students, lecturers, and researchers in the field of mathematics and statistics, serving as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and academic discussion.
